WEEKEND REPORT- (Mt Wellington Drivers in Red)

AUCKLAND'S ST KENTIGERN COLLEGE NOW THE COUNTRY'S TOP KARTSPORT SECONDARY SCHOOL

Auckland's St Kentigern College has assumed the mantle of the country's top KartSport secondary school with it's teams finishing first, second equal and fourth at the KartSport New Zealand National Schools' Championship in Nelson over the weekend.

Local school, Waimea College won the Intermediate Schools' team title from Invercargill's Rosedale Intermediate, but in the Secondary Schools' section it was St Kentigern College all the way.

Fourth former Andrew Waite, 15, anchored two of the three St Kentigern College teams, winning the Secondary Schools' title with fellow Junior Yamaha 100cc and Junior ICA class competitor Dominic Storey, and sharing second equal honours with the school's Junior Restricted class driver Ben Dallas.

Fourth overall was the St Kentigern College #3 team of Scott Fountain and Simon Evans.

Former New Zealand Cadet class champion Ben Dallas was the biggest individual winner as far as the St Kentigern College teammates were concerned, beating Northcote Intermediates's Tim Vickers to the individual Schools' title in the Junior Restricted class on Sunday.

Storey and Waite finished line astern in seventh and eighth places overall in Junior 100cc Yamaha on Saturday, and in seventh (Waite) and 15th place (Storey) in Junior ICA on Sunday.

Just over 100 school age children and young adults from all over New Zealand converged on the KartSport Nelson club's Radio Nelson Kart Raceway in the Redwoods Valley near Richmond for the second annual National Schools' Championship this weekend, with over 50 schools represented.

The country's top Cadet class racer, Nicholas Cassidy, was the only driver to successfully defend a 2003 National Schools' title but last year's Junior 100cc Yamaha winner, Caine Lobb (Whangarei Boys High) won the 2004 Schools' Rotax Max 125cc title, and recently crowned New Zealand Sprint champion Michael Burdett (McLeans College, Auckland) won the Schools' Junior 100cc Yamaha title.

There were big surprises in two of the other classes contested, with new faces Alan Shaw (Rangitoto College, Auckland) and Joshua Burgees (St Thomas College, Christchurch) beating several more fancied names to New Zealand Schools' titles in Senior 100cc Yamaha Light (Shaw) and Junior ICA (Burgess).

Peter Dixon, representing Wanaka's Mt Anglem College, was the early pace-setter in the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light heats but  Shaw won the final from Shannon Baker (James Hargest High School, Invercargill) and when the points were tallied up claimed overall victory from Greymouth High's Scott Downes, and Dixon.

Christchurch driver Joshua Burgees was the real dark horse though, starting the Junior ACA final from seventh spot but working his way through to the front by the flag.

Second was last year's North Island champion Ryan Bailey (Palmerston North Boys), third Junior 100cc Yamaha winner Michael Burdett.

DAY 1 REPORT

CADET CHAMP CASSIDY SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS SCHOOLS' KART TITLE

The country's top Cadet class Kart racer, Nicholas Cassidy, successfully defended his National Schools' title with a stunning clean-sweep of the heats and the final on the first day of competition at the KartSport New Zealand 2004 Schools' Championship at Nelson's Radio Nelson Kart Raceway this afternoon.

The 9-year-old from Marina View School in Auckland's West Harbour was again the class of the Cadet field, winning all four heats and the final to lead home fellow Aucklanders Arie Hutton (King's School) and Mitchell Evans (Hilltop School).

Fourth overall was Luke Kirk representing Christchurch's Halswell Primary school. The son of former South Island Mazda RX7 champion Dean Kirk, he beat Evans, son of Porsche racer Owen Evans, in the first and third heats to start the final from third place on the grid.

However Evans drove the race of his life in the Final to pass Hutton for second with Kirk fourth, thus ensuring third place in the overall points standings behind Cassidy and Hutton.

The Cadet title was one of three decided this afternoon, with reigning New Zealand Junior 100cc Yamaha champion Michael Burdett (McLeans College, Auckland) adding the New Zealand School's Junior 100cc Yamaha title to his CV with a faultless lights-to-flag victory in the Final.
